On Publishing – Converting eBooks to Paperbacks

I’ve come to a decision. I’m taking the plunge and doing paperback versions of the three ebooks I have out so far. I’ve decided to do print on demand (POD) versions of ‘Relic‘, ‘Busy Bees‘ and ‘Dana’s Dilemma‘ through CreateSpace.

I wasn’t going to do it but, during a recent debate about the merits of having my books available on all venues, versus the benefits of being in KDP Select and getting paid for ‘borrows’, people repeatedly said not only that not everyone in the world uses Amazon exclusively – or at all – but that not everyone cares for eBooks or has access to a lot of ebooks. Now, I KNOW that but I also know that I’m doing better than okay and, in fact, quite well with electronic media only. As an indie author, I figured I was better off writing more books and getting a whole long line of them out there over the next few years than worrying about satisfying every market that I can right now. One thing at a time, right?

I learned how to format my eBooks myself. Really, I do know my way around a computer (I better, I was a tech recruiter for a few years) and so it wasn’t too hard to figure out. Now, I can do it in my sleep. I figured, how hard could formatting for CreateSpace to do paperbacks be? Well, damn converting from a Word format that worked for ePubs to one that will work for print is a pain! It’s more than I want to get into, that’s for sure.

Enter one of my favorite websites of all time, Fiverr. Any author that’s Fiverr aware can tell immediately that my first two book covers were done there. They’re a graphic arts step up from basic. I didn’t have much money starting out so that’s what I went with. Guess what? The first two books sell and get multiple borrows every single day. I thought about changing the covers but why change what’s working? I paid a designer to do the third cover and the fourth (upcoming) was done by a family member who’s attempting to break into the cover design (but not formatting) business. I don’t use Fiverr for covers anymore but I hopped on over there to hire someone to do full wrap covers from the only front cover versions I have right now and to find someone to format the books for me.

It turns out, you can’t do a full wrap cover until you know exactly how thick your finished book is going to be. You can’t know how thick your finished book will be until it’s been properly formatted and you’ve chosen the paper it will be printed on. So now, first things first, I’m working with a formatter on Fiverr who says she works pretty fast. She’s got hundreds of great ratings so I’m confident she can do what she says she can. I’m on pins and needles, waiting.

About Anne Hagan

I'm an East Central Ohio based government employee by day and a fiction author by night. I specialize in mystery fiction featuring lesbian sleuths and cozy fiction featuring women sleuths. I also dabble in romance especially romantic lesfic. I live with my wife and our dogs in a tiny town that’s even smaller than the Morelville of my first fiction series and we wouldn't have it any other way. My wife grew up here and she has always called this little village home. Though it’s an ultra-conservative rural community, we're surrounded here by family, longtime friends and many other wonderful people with open hearts and minds. My wife and I are the co-owners of a commercial haunted house: Hagan's House of Horrors. Much as my dream has always been to write fiction, hers has been to create it through the medium of horror. We went full commercial in 2015. Watch us as we grow!
